Black Dog Appears and Disappears
"BLACK DOG" APARECE Y DESAPARECE
IT was not very long after this that there occurred the first of the mysterious events that rid us at last of the captain, though not, as you will see, of his affairs.
No mucho tiempo después de lo referido en el capítulo precedente, ocurrió el primero de los sucesos misteriosos que nos desembarazaron, por fin, del Capitán, aunque no de sus negocios como pronto lo verán los que leyeren.
It was a bitter cold winter, with long, hard frosts and heavy gales;

and it was plain from the first that my poor father was little likely to see the spring.

He sank daily, and my mother and I had all the inn upon our hands, and were kept busy enough without paying much regard to our unpleasant guest.
El manejo de la posada había caído enteramente en manos de mi madre y mías, y ambos teníamos demasiado que hacer con ella para que nos fuese dable el parar mientes con exceso en nuestro desagradable huésped.
It was one January morning, very early--a pinching, frosty morning--the cove all grey with hoar-frost, the ripple lapping softly on the stones, the sun still low and only touching the hilltops and shining far to seaward.

The captain had risen earlier than usual and set out down the beach, his cutlass swinging under the broad skirts of the old blue coat, his brass telescope under his arm, his hat tilted back upon his head.

I remember his breath hanging like smoke in his wake as he strode off, and the last sound I heard of him as he turned the big rock was a loud snort of indignation, as though his mind was still running upon Dr. Livesey.

Well, mother was upstairs with father and I was laying the breakfast-table against the captain's return when the parlour door opened and a man stepped in on whom I had never set my eyes before.

He was a pale, tallowy creature, wanting two fingers of the left hand, and though he wore a cutlass, he did not look much like a fighter.
Era éste un individuo pálido y encanijado, en cuya mano izquierda faltaban dos dedos y que, aunque llevaba también su cuchilla al cinto, no tenía, ni con mucho, el aspecto de un hombre de armas tomar.
I had always my eye open for seafaring men, with one leg or two, and I remember this one puzzled me.
Yo siempre estaba en acecho de marineros de una sola pierna, ó de dos, pero el que acababa de aparecérseme era para mí un enigma.
He was not sailorly, and yet he had a smack of the sea about him too.
No tenía el aspecto de un verdadero marino y sin embargo había en él no sé qué aire de gente del mar.
I asked him what was for his service, and he said he would take rum; but as I was going out of the room to fetch it, he sat down upon a table and motioned me to draw near.
Le pregunté, desde luego, en qué podía servirle y él me contestó que deseaba tomar un poco de rom, pero apenas iba yo á salir de la sala en busca de lo que pedía cuando se sentó á una de las mesas excitándome á que me acercase á él.
I paused where I was, with my napkin in my hand.

“Come here, sonny,” says he. “Come nearer here.”

I took a step nearer.

“Is this here table for my mate Bill?” he asked with a kind of leer.

I told him I did not know his mate Bill, and this was for a person who stayed in our house whom we called the captain.
--Ignoro quien es su camarada Bill, le contesté yo; esta mesa es para una persona que se aloja en nuestra casa y á quien nosotros llamamos el Capitán.
“Well,” said he, “my mate Bill would be called the captain, as like as not.
--Eso es--replicó él--mi camarada Bill lo mismo puede ser llamado Capitán, que nó.
He has a cut on one cheek and a mighty pleasant way with him, particularly in drink, has my mate Bill.
Tiene una cicatriz en una mejilla y unos modos valientemente agradables, muy propios suyos, sobre todo, cuando está bebido.
We'll put it, for argument like, that your captain has a cut on one cheek--and we'll put it, if you like, that that cheek's the right one.

Ah, well! I told you.

Now, is my mate Bill in this here house?”

I told him he was out walking.
--Ahora anda fuera, le contesté yo; ha salido á paseo.
“Which way, sonny? Which way is he gone?”

And when I had pointed out the rock and told him how the captain was likely to return, and how soon, and answered a few other questions,
Señalé yo entonces en dirección de la roca, diciéndole que el Capitán no tardaría en volver; respondí á algunas otras de sus preguntas y entonces él añadió:
“Ah,” said he, “this'll be as good as drink to my mate Bill.”

The expression of his face as he said these words was not at all pleasant, and I had my own reasons for thinking that the stranger was mistaken, even supposing he meant what he said.
La expresión de su cara, al decir esto, no tenía nada de agradable, y yo tenía mis razones para pensar que aquel extraño se equivocaba, en el supuesto de que creyese lo que decía.
But it was no affair of mine, I thought; and besides, it was difficult to know what to do.

The stranger kept hanging about just inside the inn door, peering round the corner like a cat waiting for a mouse.
El recién venido se mantenía esquivándose tras la parte interior de la puerta de la posada, ojeando de soslayo en torno de su escondrijo, como gato que está en acecho de un ratón.
Once I stepped out myself into the road, but he immediately called me back, and as I did not obey quick enough for his fancy, a most horrible change came over his tallowy face, and he ordered me in with an oath that made me jump.
Una vez, salíme yo afuera hacia el camino, pero él me llamó adentro inmediatamente y como no obedeciese su mandato tan pronto como él quería, un cambio instantáneo y espantoso se operó en su semblante enjuto, y me repitió su orden acompañándola de un juramento que me hizo brincar.
As soon as I was back again he returned to his former manner, half fawning, half sneering, patted me on the shoulder,

told me I was a good boy and he had taken quite a fancy to me.

But the great thing for boys is discipline, sonny--discipline.

Now, if you had sailed along of Bill, you wouldn't have stood there to be spoke to twice--not you.

That was never Bill's way, nor the way of sich as sailed with him.

And here, sure enough, is my mate Bill, with a spy-glass under his arm, bless his old 'art, to be sure.

You and me'll just go back into the parlour, sonny, and get behind the door, and we'll give Bill a little surprise--bless his 'art, I say again.”

So saying, the stranger backed along with me into the parlour and put me behind him in the corner so that we were both hidden by the open door.
Al decir esto mi hombre retrocedió conmigo á la sala y me colocó detrás de él, en el rincón, de tal manera que á ambos nos ocultaba la puerta abierta.
I was very uneasy and alarmed, as you may fancy, and it rather added to my fears to observe that the stranger was certainly frightened himself.
Yo estaba positivamente inquieto y alarmado, como es fácil figurárselo, y añadía no poco á mis temores el observar que aquel nuevo personaje tampoco las tenía todas consigo.
He cleared the hilt of his cutlass and loosened the blade in the sheath; and all the time we were waiting there he kept swallowing as if he felt what we used to call a lump in the throat.
Yo le veía alistar el puño de su cuchilla y aflojar la hoja en la vaina, sin que, durante todo el tiempo que estuvimos en espera, hubiera cesado de _tragar gordo_, ó como si hubiera tenido, según la expresión familiar, un nudo en la garganta.
At last in strode the captain, slammed the door behind him, without looking to the right or left, and marched straight across the room to where his breakfast awaited him.
Por último entró el Capitán, empujó la puerta tras de sí, sin ver á izquierda ni á derecha, y marchó directamente, á través del cuarto, hacia donde le esperaba su almuerzo.
“Bill,” said the stranger in a voice that I thought he had tried to make bold and big.
Entonces mi hombre pronunció, con una voz que me pareció se esforzaba en hacer hueca y campanuda, esta sola palabra: --¡Bill!
The captain spun round on his heel and fronted us; all the brown had gone out of his face, and even his nose was blue;
El Capitán giró rápidamente sobre sus talones y se encaró á nosotros. Todo lo que había de moreno en su rostro había desaparecido en aquel momento y hasta su misma nariz ofrecía un tinte de una lividez azulada.
he had the look of a man who sees a ghost, or the evil one, or something worse, if anything can be; and upon my word, I felt sorry to see him all in a moment turn so old and sick.
Tenía toda la apariencia de un hombre que vé un espectro, ó al diablo mismo, ó algo peor, si es que lo hay y, créaseme bajo mi palabra, sentí compasión por él, al verle, en un solo instante, ponerse tan viejo y tan enfermo.
“Come, Bill, you know me; you know an old shipmate, Bill, surely,” said the stranger.
--Ven acá, Bill, tú me conoces bien. Tú no has olvidado á un viejo camarada, Bill, estoy seguro de ello; continuó diciendo el recién-venido.
The captain made a sort of gasp. “Black Dog!” said he.
El Capitán exclamó entonces en una especie de boqueada penosa: --¡Black Dog![1]
“And who else?” returned the other, getting more at his ease.
--¿Pues quién había de ser sino él? replicó el otro, comenzando á sentirse un poco más tranquilo.
“Black Dog as ever was, come for to see his old shipmate Billy, at the Admiral Benbow inn.
Black Dog, sí, que, lo mismo que antes viene aquí, á la Posada del "_Almirante Benbow_" para saludar á su viejo camarada Billy.
Ah, Bill, Bill, we have seen a sight of times, us two, since I lost them two talons,” holding up his mutilated hand.
¡Ah, Bill, Bill, cuántas cosas hemos visto juntos, nosotros dos, desde la época en que perdí estos dos "garfios"! añadió, levantando un poco su mano mutilada.
“Now, look here,” said the captain; “you've run me down; here I am; well, then, speak up; what is it?”
--Bien, dijo el Capitán, ya veo que me has cogido... aquí me tienes... vamos... ¿qué quieres?... habla... dí... ¿de qué se trata?
“That's you, Bill,” returned Black Dog, “you're in the right of it, Billy.
--Veo bien que eres el mismo, replicó Black Dog; tienes razón Bill, tienes razón.
I'll have a glass of rum from this dear child here, as I've took such a liking to; and we'll sit down, if you please, and talk square, like old shipmates.”
Voy á tomar un vaso de rom que me traerá este buen chiquillo á quien tanto me he aficionado desde luego; en seguida nos sentaremos, si tú quieres y hablaremos lisa y llanamente como buenos camaradas que somos.
When I returned with the rum, they were already seated on either side of the captain's breakfast-table--
Cuando yo volví con el rom ya los dos se habían sentado en cada una de las cabeceras de la mesa en que el Capitán iba á almorzar.
Black Dog next to the door and sitting sideways so as to have one eye on his old shipmate and one, as I thought, on his retreat.
Black Dog habíase quedado más cerca de la puerta y se le veía sentado de lado, de modo que pudiese tener un ojo atento á su camarada antiguo, y otro, según me pareció, á su retirada libre.
He bade me go and leave the door wide open.
Despidióme luego ordenándome que dejase la puerta abierta de par en par, y añadió:
“None of your keyholes for me, sonny,” he said; and I left them together and retired into the bar.
--Nada de espiar por las cerraduras, muchacho, ¿entiendes? Yo no tuve más que hacer sino dejarlos solos y retirarme á la cantina del establecimiento.
For a long time, though I certainly did my best to listen, I could hear nothing but a low gattling; but at last the voices began to grow higher, and I could pick up a word or two, mostly oaths, from the captain.
Durante muy largo tiempo, por más que puse mis cinco sentidos en tratar de oir algo de lo que pasaba, nada llegó á mis oídos sino fué un rumor vago y confuso de conversación; pero al cabo las voces comenzaron á hacerse más y más perceptibles; y ya me fué posible el escuchar distintamente alguna que otra palabra, la mayor parte de ellas, juramentos é insolencias proferidos por el Capitán.
“No, no, no, no; and an end of it!” he cried once. And again, “If it comes to swinging, swing all, say I.”
--¡Nó, nó, nó nó! le oí proferir, nó! y concluyamos de una vez!" Y después añadió: si hay que ahorcar, ahorcarlos á todos: y basta!
Then all of a sudden there was a tremendous explosion of oaths and other noises--the chair and table went over in a lump, a clash of steel followed, and then a cry of pain,
Luego, de una manera repentina, todo se volvió una tremenda explosión de juramentos y otros ruidos temerosos. La silla y la mesa rodaron en masa, siguióse un chischás de aceros que se chocaban y luego un grito de dolor:
and the next instant I saw Black Dog in full flight, and the captain hotly pursuing, both with drawn cutlasses, and the former streaming blood from the left shoulder.
en ese mismo instante pude ver á Black Dog en plena fuga y al Capitán persiguiéndole encarnizadamente: ambos con sus cuchillas desenvainadas y el primero de ellos, manando sangre abundantemente de su hombro izquierdo.
Just at the door the captain aimed at the fugitive one last tremendous cut, which would certainly have split him to the chine had it not been intercepted by our big signboard of Admiral Benbow. You may see the notch on the lower side of the frame to this day.
Precisamente al llegar á la puerta, el Capitán descargó sobre el fugitivo una última y tremenda cuchillada con la cual sin duda alguna lo habría abierto hasta la espina, si no hubiera tropezado su arma con la enseña de nuestra posada que fué la que recibió el golpe, cuya señal es fácil ver, todavía hoy, en el marco de nuestro "_Almirante Benbow_" hacia la parte de abajo.
That blow was the last of the battle.
Aquel mandoble fué el último de la riña.
Once out upon the road, Black Dog, in spite of his wound, showed a wonderful clean pair of heels and disappeared over the edge of the hill in half a minute.
Una vez afuera ya, y sobre el camino público, Black Dog, á despecho de su herida, pareció decir, con una prisa maravillosa, "pies, para qué os quiero" y en medio minuto le vimos desaparecer tras de la cima de la loma cercana.
The captain, for his part, stood staring at the signboard like a bewildered man. Then he passed his hand over his eyes several times and at last turned back into the house.
El Capitán, por su parte, permaneció clavado cerca de la enseña del establecimiento como un hombre extraviado. Poco después pasó su mano varias veces sobre sus ojos, como para cerciorarse de que no soñaba, y en seguida volvió á penetrar en la casa.
“Jim,” says he, “rum”; and as he spoke, he reeled a little, and caught himself with one hand against the wall.
--Jim, me dijo, ¡trae rom! y al hablarme se bamboleaba un poco y con una mano se apoyaba contra la pared.
“Are you hurt?” cried I.
--¿Está Vd. herido? le pregunté.
“Rum,” he repeated. “I must get away from here. Rum! Rum!”

I ran to fetch it, but I was quite unsteadied by all that had fallen out, and I broke one glass and fouled the tap, and while I was still getting in my own way, I heard a loud fall in the parlour, and running in, beheld the captain lying full length upon the floor.
Corrí á buscárselo; pero con la excitación que los sucesos ocurridos me habían ocasionado, rompí un vaso, obstruí la llave, y cuando todavía estaba yo procurando despacharme lo mejor posible, escuché el golpe ruidoso y pesado de una persona que se desplomaba en la sala. Acudí corriendo y me encontré con el cuerpo del Capitán tendido de largo á largo sobre el suelo.
At the same instant my mother, alarmed by the cries and fighting, came running downstairs to help me.
En el mismo instante, mi madre, á quien habían alarmado las voces y rumores de la pelea, descendía corriendo la escalera para venir en mi ayuda.
Between us we raised his head. He was breathing very loud and hard, but his eyes were closed and his face a horrible colour.
Entre ambos levantamos la cabeza al Capitán, que respiraba fuerte y penosamente, pero cuyos ojos estaban cerrados y en cuya cara aparecía un color horrible.
“Dear, deary me,” cried my mother, “what a disgrace upon the house! And your poor father sick!”
--¡Cielos, cielos santos! grito mi madre, ¡qué desgracia sobre nuestra casa, y con tu pobre padre enfermo!
In the meantime, we had no idea what to do to help the captain, nor any other thought but that he had got his death-hurt in the scuffle with the stranger.
Entre tanto á mí no se me ocurría la más insignificante idea sobre lo que pudiera hacerse para socorrer al Capitán, pareciéndome seguro que había sido herido de muerte en su encarnizado combate con aquel extraño.
I got the rum, to be sure, and tried to put it down his throat, but his teeth were tightly shut and his jaws as strong as iron.
Traje el rom para asegurarme de ello y traté de hacerlo pasar á su garganta; pero tenía los dientes terriblemente apretados los unos contra los otros y sus quijadas estaban tan duras como si hubieran sido de acero.
It was a happy relief for us when the door opened and Doctor Livesey came in, on his visit to my father.
Fué para nosotros, entonces, un grandísimo alivio el ver abrirse la puerta y aparecer en ella al Doctor Livesey que venía á hacer á mi padre su visita cuotidiana.
“Oh, doctor,” we cried, “what shall we do? Where is he wounded?”
--¡Oh, Doctor! exclamamos mi madre y yo á la vez. ¿qué haremos? ¿en dónde estará herido?
“Wounded? A fiddle-stick's end!” said the doctor. “No more wounded than you or I.

The man has had a stroke, as I warned him.
Este hombre acaba de tener un ataque como yo se lo había pronosticado.
Now, Mrs. Hawkins, just you run upstairs to your husband and tell him, if possible, nothing about it.
Ahora bien, Mrs. Hawkins, corra Vd. arriba y, si es posible, no diga Vd. á nuestro enfermo ni una palabra de lo que pasa.
For my part, I must do my best to save this fellow's trebly worthless life; Jim, you get me a basin.”
Por mi parte, mi deber es tratar de hacer cuanto pueda por salvar la vida tres veces inútil de este hombre. Anda pues, tú, Jim, y trae luego una palangana.
When I got back with the basin, the doctor had already ripped up the captain's sleeve and exposed his great sinewy arm.
Cuando volví, trayendo lo que se me pidió, el Doctor había ya descubierto el nervudo brazo del Capitán, desembarazándolo de sus mangas.
It was tattooed in several places.
Todo él aparecía pintado con esas figuras indelebles que se dibujan en el cuerpo los marineros y los presidiarios.
“Here's luck,” “A fair wind,” and “Billy Bones his fancy,” were very neatly and clearly executed on the forearm; and up near the shoulder there was a sketch of a gallows and a man hanging from it--done, as I thought, with great spirit.
"_Buena suerte_" decía una de sus inscripciones; y en otras, "_Vientos prósperos_," "_Caprichos de Billy Bones_" se podía leer en caracteres claros y cuidadosamente ejecutados sobre el antebrazo. “Prophetic,” said the doctor, touching this picture with his finger.

“And now, Master Billy Bones, if that be your name, we'll have a look at the colour of your blood. Jim,” he said, “are you afraid of blood?”
Y ahora, Maese Billy Bones, si tal es su nombre, vamos á ver de qué color es su sangre. Jim, añadió, ¿tendrás tú miedo de la sangre?
“No, sir,” said I.
--No, señor, le contesté.
“Well, then,” said he, “you hold the basin”;

and with that he took his lancet and opened a vein.
Tomó acto continuo su lanceta y con gran habilidad picó una vena.
A great deal of blood was taken before the captain opened his eyes and looked mistily about him.
Una gran cantidad de sangre salió antes de que el Capitán abriera los ojos y echase en torno suyo una mirada vaga y anublada.
First he recognized the doctor with an unmistakable frown; then his glance fell upon me, and he looked relieved.
Reconoció luego al Doctor á quien miró con un ceño imposible de equivocar; en seguida me miró á mí y mi presencia pareció aliviarlo un tanto.
But suddenly his colour changed, and he tried to raise himself, crying,

“There is no Black Dog here,” said the doctor, “except what you have on your own back.

You have been drinking rum; you have had a stroke, precisely as I told you; and I have just, very much against my own will, dragged you headforemost out of the grave. Now, Mr. Bones--”
Ha seguido Vd. bebiendo rom, y como yo se lo había anticipado ha venido un ataque. Muy contra mi voluntad me he visto obligado, por deber, á socorrerle, pudiendo decir que casi lo he sacado á Vd. de la sepultura. Y ahora Maese Bones...
“That's not my name,” he interrupted.
--Ese no es mi nombre, interrumpió él.
“Much I care,” returned the doctor. “It's the name of a buccaneer of my acquaintance; and I call you by it for the sake of shortness, and what I have to say to you is this;
--No importa, replicó el Doctor, es el nombre de cierto filibustero á quien yo conozco y le llamo á Vd. por él en gracia de la brevedad. Lo único que tengo, pues, que añadir es esto:
one glass of rum won't kill you, but if you take one you'll take another and another, and I stake my wig if you don't break off short, you'll die--do you understand that?--die, and go to your own place, like the man in the Bible.
un vaso de rom no le haría á Vd. ningún daño; pero si Vd. toma uno, tomará otro, y otro después, y apostaría mi peluca á que, si no se contiene pronto y á tiempo, se morirá muy en breve... ¿entiende Vd. esto...? se morirá y se irá al mismísimo infierno, que es su propio lugar, como lo reza la Biblia.
Come, now, make an effort. I'll help you to your bed for once.”
